Greetings Brunonians! My name is John Choi ‘95 and one of the newest board members of BrownOC. I'd like to introduce myself and our upcoming Lunar New Year Celebration dinner (Friday, January 31).
I grew up in Los Angeles and even though I’ve lived in different cities and states since Brown, my four years in Providence were some of the most impactful years in my life. I met and built friendships with people from different states, countries, and backgrounds, many who I still meet with regularly and remind me of our special community. My 6 year old son Andrew also reminds me, since he is curious about where I went to college, since he’s never lived outside of L.A.
Moving back to southern California and going to general Brown alumni events, it was a reminder of our diverse, intellectual, and collaborative community that seems to transcend generations. Over the years working in nonprofit, corporate marketing, finance, startups and currently in financial planning, I appreciate adding value and extending resources to others. I volunteered to be a board member to help connect alumni to one another within this special community.
As a Korean American, I am not unfamiliar with the Asian Lunar New Year. I thought I was the Year of the Ox for many years, until I discovered the lunar New Year is not based on the calendar year and since my birthday is January 6th, I was actually the Year of the Rat. What an identity crisis! I love food and community, so what better way to start off the Year of the Snake than by gathering together over a meal to connect with new and old friendships and celebrate the New Year with our special Brown community.
