Greetings fellow Brown alumni, families and friends!
2022 has been a year of progress and engagement for your club.
We continued to hold events throughout the year that combined virtual collaboration with outside groups and, when possible, in-person events.
2022 in Review:
i) March 22. Filmmaker Betsy West '73 on "My Name is Pauli Murray” with Aaron Thomas. BCOC and Brown Women’s Network celebrated 130 Years of Women at Brown with a virtual interview featuring Oscar-nominated director Betsy West.
ii) March 27. Higher Keys Concert at the Albakri residence in Newport Beach.
The Higher Keys returned for their first OC visit since 2011.
iii) May 11. An Evening with Ira Glass: Seven Things I've Learned. Perennial favorite Ira Glass ’81 returned to the Barclay Theater at UCI.
iv) June 11. Ukrainian Relief Day of Service. BCOC hosted its first ever transcontinental fundraising event with guest speaker Emma Cherniavsky ’93 addressing us live from London, an in-person get-together in Corona del Mar, and participants attending virtually from Europe, the UK, NY, LA, Honolulu and elsewhere.
v) August 14. Model Breakers w Charlene Wang plus Send-Off party. This year’s send off to the Class of ’26 was another first - a mash-up event including author Charlene Wang ’21 talking about breaking through stereotypes and embracing your authenticity.
vi) August 28. Shakespeare Comedy of Errors. BCOC continued its tradition of summertime Shakespeare events with 2022s classic “Comedy of Errors” accompanied by a unique 70's musical score written for the Swan Festival presentation.
vii) September 22. Top Colleges Mixer at Equinox.
For the first time in three years, BCOC brought back the OC Ivy+ Top Colleges Mixer. Brown Club was joined by close to 100 alumni from other OC-based Ivy and similar alumni clubs - held appropriately enough on the autumnal equinox at Club Equinox in Irvine!
Wrapping up the year, your club:
· held its annual election in December, re-seating the current board officers,
· bid farewell and many thanks to Gina Martinez ’06 stepping down from the board after four years of tireless service,
· welcomed back Shawna Schaffner ’01 as our new Athletic Events Co-ordinator and also -
· welcomed new at-large board member Kyle McIntyre ’16 who will join Shawna on the Athletic Events Committee.
I wish our members, supporters, friends and families a very Happy Holiday season and Best Wishes for 2023. As always, I thank you for your support, welcome your input and participation and look forward to seeing you next year!
For the Board,
